Misc. Essays and Writings by Randy Cassingham
Most of the stuff I've written -- not
counting things related to my newspaper columns -- are pretty hard to find.
They're scattered around in various magazines. When I'm particularly bored,
I'll type them up (if they're not already computer-stored), HTML-ize them,
and add them here.
- I may as well start with the first thing I ever
got published. It was in 1980. The editors of Emergency magazine
deemed it worthy of the space, yet not worthy of any payment. I let that
slide the first time, but decided that was the last time I'd ever let a
magazine make money off my writing without my getting my fair share. It's
also my first humor piece: what really goes through the heads of
ambulance drivers as they scream down the road?
- Thus, the second article that got published, I was sure to be
paid. Also in Emergency magazine, it's about the most
unusual ambulance I've ever seen.
- Actually, I've been interested in journalism for quite some time,
starting as a photographer. More on my brief career as a photographer is
on this page.
- People are lucky when they have good friends. It is a difficult thing when
you outlive them. It was my honor to eulogize my friend Jerry
Olivieri.
- The Killer Tsunami of Christmas 2004 raised awareness of an early article
I wrote for Westways magazine in 1986, warning that it's "only a matter of
time" until we see a major tsunami.
